I set up the Baby Containment Device today, in a fit of "Oh my gods I can't cope." (Bonus revelation: if I give her food when she's in the BCD, the cats can't steal it. Arthur just mopes mournfully outside and presses his face into the mesh, at which point she pokes him in the nose.)

This puts her in a position where, if the door to the bathroom is open, she can peeeeer into the bathroom. As this is One Of The Places The Parents Vanish Into Regularly, this is very exciting. Thus, the happy "I see you!" face peered at me through the mesh.

Now, a while back she figured out that she could lean around objects to see people and peekaboo at them. And that people would sometimes lean to behind furniture, laptops, etc. to peekaboo with her.

I often do a few rounds of peekaboo before ducking into the loo in order to make the whole vanishing thing less upsetting.

So....

Round happy babyface peers at me.

Baby leeeeans to one side, still watching me through the mesh.

Baby straightens up! Peekaboo!

Then she did it to the other side....

KJ is being vocal:

21:20:52 ‹eemp› I feel the same way, Lamprey. Shower did not wake me up as I had hoped.
21:21:43 ‹Kiya› This is all she will say. Bloo bloo bluh, bloo bloo bluh, bloo bloo bloo bloo bluh.
21:24:16 ‹meej› Like a Police song chorus.

Baby is levelling up.

She has put a point in crawl, two points in language ...

If I play solitaire on the floor she creep-crawls over to steal my aces.

If I say "grab hands" she grabs my hands. If I make the eat sign and ask her if she wants to eat she kicks and squeals (if she's hungry).

She is currently holding a board book in front of her face and peeking around it to play peekaboo with us.

My doom, it is so adorable.

[livejournal.com profile] artan_eter just wandered in with KJ and said, "So, it's kind of meta, but she won't eat food, but she will eat the food processor."

Baby was gnawing on the lid to the Cuisinart.

In other news, there were ducks swimming in my backyard today, I am told.

(It was notably more chaotic on my end than it appears. She also navigated off the chat window several times, attempted to bookmark it thrice, kept toggling between Opera and the OSX Dashboard, and turned the screen brightness up and down a lot. And some of the great stuff - like the one with a capital omega in it - got vanished in her websurfing.)

KJ is teething.

How do I know this?

She bit me on the nose.

(And it was sharp. She's nommed me on the nose plenty of times before.)

Here is the scene:

After a restless and anxious night, mother and baby are sprawled in the master bed, carefully hemmed in with pillows for safety. Baby has finally settled down to not thrashing constantly, though there is a little space between them because baby kicks like a mule.

Mother, hazed and so exhausted that when she closes her eyes she feels like everything in the world reduces to wireframe and starts to spin giddily around her head, squints blearily at sleeping baby.

Sleeping baby rolls onto her side.

Baby's arms come up, blindly groping, her eyes unopened, flailing with silent, toothless menace. The arms claw forward, grasp, the roll moves a little further.

TIny hands close around a nipple.

The mouth opens ....

We would like to apologise for the delay in return of the second quarter report, there were some numbers that came in a little late and required review. The past six months at Happy Baby Industries have been, as you all know, quite busy.

While growth has levelled off somewhat from the benchmarks set in the First Quarter Report, this was completely within expectations, and in fact progress has continued consistent with our initial outlays. The result: the Happy Baby Project, at six months after release, has a mass typical of competitor's products a year post-release, and a length more typical of nine months after product introduction.

We have been bringing on more integrated and complex systems, such as Peekaboo Initiation, Cup Utilisation, Wildlife Garment Studies, Unassisted Sitting, and Avocado Demolition. The Happy Baby product is demonstrably smarter than a parakeet, has adapted to a variety of storage solutions, and has started to work on grasping complex systems. Attempts to mount the unit onto larger systems have not been entirely successful, however, though baby-feline interface continues fairly easily.

We will admit that bringing new functionality online has introduced bugs into the Happy Baby project, which we are hoping to correct with software uploads very soon now. Amongst the known bugs are: failure to sleep, screaming at visitors, howling when not under active maintenance conditions.

Thank you for your kind attention to our product. We here at Happy Baby Industries appreciate your response.

Actually, the last two weeks have been kind of "I think I want to mail me to Patagonia" due to KJ giving up sleep for New Year's and having to be retaught the fine art of the snooze. (With some success, but not enough success to put her down in the crib successfully as of yet.)

(At least not for anything other than playtime, as rolling-about-in-the-crib-gleefully time is among the best things ever, along with jars, spoons, toes, [livejournal.com profile] artan_eter, grocery stores, stealing glasses off faces, and Arthur.)

In any case, a parcel arrived today from [livejournal.com profile] kviri and [livejournal.com profile] frozencapybara.

It contined ...

This.

In other baby-related stuff, a couple of videos are up on this YouTube channel I set up for those people who would like to see live-action KJ.

In baby vs. Arthur news, she was sitting and playing with a jar on the couch and Arthur crawled into my lap. This led to her caaaarefully picking up the tip of his tail, thoughtfully sucking on it, and letting go with an expression of vague distaste. As one might expect from a cat of his known wit and acumen, he did not notice.

(He noticed last night when she nommed him on the ear; the dampness was sufficient that he shook off the baby spit and splattered me mightily.)

Still have not mailed baby to Patagonia.

Context: at five months of age, she made her first New Year's Resolution. It appears to have been "I give up sleep."

She apparently went from "I give up sleep at night" (except when curled up against me and nursing) to "I gave up sleep" today. I just got her to go down for a nap.

She has been up since 8:30. Except for one 'dozed off in the bouncer and woke up when [livejournal.com profile] artan_eter moved' and one fifteen minute nap that ended in inexplicable, inconsolable screaming.

Mama is tired.

... and wants a pizza.

We have accidentally had baby's first solid food.

More specifically: Dad is up visiting, and brought to us an assortment of extremely ripe, very good pears. The last of which were cut into sections on the breakfast table today.

[livejournal.com profile] artan_eter mumbled his way downstairs and was sitting next to my father, who was holding KJ. He speared the chunks of pear off the serving plate and onto his plate, much to KJ's fascination; she reached out curiously.

He held out the fork for her to smell the pear.

She grabbed the fork in one hand and started licking the pear. After licking it for a bit, she started to nurse on it.

He eventually took the fork back. Her eyebrows went doooooown, her expression went to, roughly, "... heeeeeeey ...."

So she was given a pear again, and gummed it vigorously for a while. Because hey, she's five months old, she wants a pear dammit, she can nom on it. So she nommed it for a while, and then eventually got done with that and started playing with it instead, at which point I brought her off to nurse for a bit.

Yesterday KJ and I mustered our first open social engagement (as opposed to going to games) since she was born, heading down to Diesel to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] nex0s for a few hours and meet her small person (a little older than KJ).

Because this was at the same time as the [livejournal.com profile] polyboston social, many other people got a chance to meet KJ, including but not limited to: [livejournal.com profile] sunspiral, [livejournal.com profile] rigel, a [livejournal.com profile] coraline's fellow (dunno his LJ handle if any exists), a person who prefers anonymity in public posts of a certain type (hi, you know who you are!), various other attendees of the social, and also got a stray wave from [livejournal.com profile] mindways, who was there for unrelated reasons and left to do Secret Agent Stuff. ;)

I had a nice mug of the Diesel's chai (which I am unreasonably fond of), and did not let KJ steal it from me (it was at that point not hot anymore, but even so, she had a nice grip on the mug's handle there). She was so excited by all the noise, lights, and random people that she neglected to complain about the condition of her diaper for quite some time, which made her reasonably low-maintenance.

When she started getting overloaded, I bundled her up and hiked around the corner to Davis Square Martial Arts for the tail end of the tai chi class, and thus she got to meet the instructors and classmates. Then we went home, and she slept hard.

A good day.

Just shy of nineteen weeks we had her four-month wellbaby.

Nineteen pounds, one ounce; twenty-six and a half inches.

That's ninety-seventh percentile on each. (And officially bigger than the cats.)

As [livejournal.com profile] artan_eter commented, we fear the ninety-eighth and higher percentile babies.
