The basic problem with the axioms of reconstructionism in paganism is that, as a descendant of Puritans, the religion of my ancestors turns out to be Unitarian Universalism.

Some gaps no amount of lore can fill.
I just posted this to Fet in a thread in which the subject of the sorts of messages women on dating, sex, or relationship sites receive; someone compared them to Nigerian scams, to which someone replied "Sometimes the inappropriate messages ARE Nigerian scams".

Since I've gotten several "My coworkers are asking me why I'm laughing and I can't tell them" responses, and also because the language is questionable in some places, I am putting this behind a cut. )

Schroedinger says, "But it does sound like a fun project from an outside perspective - containing the universe, that is. ;)"
Whitney says, "I need more control rods."
Juniper says, "Liquid cooling system?"
Whitney says, "... I think that's called 'a stiff drink'."
Whitney says, "I probably need one of those too."

Schroedinger endorses helpfully.
Juniper says, "D thinks that's not a bad idea."
Whitney says, "That's D for ya."
Whitney says, ".... augh my mysticism is coming out in MUSHcode all of a sudden waaaaaaah."

"You're making me ... pedantic. You won't like me when I'm pedantic."
A while back there was the original Infancy: The Text Adventure, courtesy [livejournal.com profile] xiphias.

Today we got a variant that went something like:

> LOOK AT BABY
The baby is very cute.

The baby hands you a wind-up flashlight.

> GIVE FLASHLIGHT TO BABY

The baby hands you a wind-up flashlight.

> GIVE FLASHLIGHT TO BABY

The baby hands you a wind-up flashlight.

> WIND FLASHLIGHT

The device makes a pleasant whirring sound as you hand-charge the battery.

> GIVE FLASHLIGHT TO BABY

The baby hands you a wind-up flashlight.

> TURN ON FLASHLIGHT

The glow from the flashlight is somewhat bluish and reasonably bright.

> GIVE FLASHLIGHT TO BABY

The baby takes the flashlight and starts to play with it.

In this case, the role of "the baby" was played by KJ and "you" by [livejournal.com profile] brooksmoses. (I had to give him a tip to solve the puzzle.)

"I'm better at stylised than representational."

"Most people are. That's why humans didn't develop representational art for ages. You do a human, you don't try to make it look like Bob. You put stuff that Bob likes around it, everyone who knows Bob knows it's him."

"And you put his name on it."

"Yeah."

"And if you're Egyptian, you put in a fishing float!"

"... why?"

"Bob... bob... bob..."

"Oh."

"Also fishing is symbolic of sex and regeneration, so you really want it in there."
I was dinking around with the aspects in my natal chart and taking notes on them last night as a cooldown from one of the worst baby days ever, and found the results hilarious. As I just summarised in chat:

[13:20] [Kiya] My sun/moon/Mercury aspects boil down to:
[13:20] [Kiya] "You are so creative that you need to stub your toe on reality a bit to make sure you remember it exists. Fortunately, you're accident-prone."
[13:21] [Kiya] "It's a good thing you're a completely lazy decadent ass because otherwise your poor impulse control and short temper would get you into a LOT of trouble."
[13:21] [Kiya] "You totally want to communicate all the time! It's just that nobody understands you."
[13:21] [Kiya] "Also you have self-image issues."
[13:22] [Kiya] I find this completely hilarious.

...

[13:26] [Kiya] Oh yeah. Also a tendency towards megalomania.
[13:27] [Kiya] ... and theological analysis.
Last night when I crawled up to bed I greeted [livejournal.com profile] artan_eter with, "Hail, he-who-is-in-his-pillow-fortification! Could I have some of the bed?"
"Make a spot check."
"*rolls* Six."
"... so, about forty-five minutes later, the brawl is still going, and you notice you haven't seen him in a while."
In a discussion over in [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll someone made a comment about not seeing monarchist science fiction.

I now want to build a transhumanist Egyptian-style monarchy virtual world and write stories in it. Possibly with stealth theology, because what doesn't these days? At least that I do.

(I do wish I had an easier time coming up with plots. Settings are easy.)

[livejournal.com profile] kaifu is a hero of the revolution for spending two days with me doing most of the babyminding so that I could get a babycation. I got some work done but mostly I got a bit of a break. Oh, and I planted some irises, which has needed done for a month and actually could not be done while covered in baby (if I put her down on a blanket outside and don't sit with her she flips out).

On a not entirely unrelated note, the spell-list for a first level sorceror-nanny should probably be:

- mending
- prestidigitation
- dancing lights
- mage hand

- sleep
- comprehend languages (or, if the GM rules that comprehend languages does not work on babybabble, unseen servant)

(Has to be a sorceror, a wizard's pre-prep mentality is not compatible with the Chaos That Is Baby. One must be adaptable.)
I set up the Baby Containment Device today, in a fit of "Oh my gods I can't cope." (Bonus revelation: if I give her food when she's in the BCD, the cats can't steal it. Arthur just mopes mournfully outside and presses his face into the mesh, at which point she pokes him in the nose.)

This puts her in a position where, if the door to the bathroom is open, she can peeeeer into the bathroom. As this is One Of The Places The Parents Vanish Into Regularly, this is very exciting. Thus, the happy "I see you!" face peered at me through the mesh.

Now, a while back she figured out that she could lean around objects to see people and peekaboo at them. And that people would sometimes lean to behind furniture, laptops, etc. to peekaboo with her.

I often do a few rounds of peekaboo before ducking into the loo in order to make the whole vanishing thing less upsetting.

So....

Round happy babyface peers at me.

Baby leeeeans to one side, still watching me through the mesh.

Baby straightens up! Peekaboo!

Then she did it to the other side....

KJ and I Go Downtown )
REAL BOSTON TEA PARTY

Tomorrow, from I believe 10 am until 1 pm, Boston Common: permit achieved for near the visitor's center which is I believe by the Park Street T. While our festivities are in response to certain gentlefolk who have contributed to the decline of civil discourse, we intend to be genteel in our gathering.

Should you desire to attend for tea, kindly do endeavour to bring an appropriate contribution: cookies, wee sandwiches, other appropriate foods; tea, of course; drinking vessels and similar supplies. Do dress in a manner appropriate to polite society, and, "if not to the nines, at least to the four and a halves". Polite signs in favor of decorum, cucumber sandwiches for ready money, and excellent tea are encouraged; the official website has some suggestions.

KJ and I will be in attendance, barring disaster of the transit variety or rain. I will, of course, be wearing my morning coat and hat. Unfortunately, it will not be warm enough for KJ to dress for the occasion in her summer sundress, so the babe will be garbed in a prosaic and undistinguished fashion, alas.

Hope to see some of you there!

Ta!
So [livejournal.com profile] teinedreugan and I went to the family Easter service at a local UU church today to see if it was a place that I might fit in.

Let's just say the head minister got up and:

"It's also a holiday today, what holiday is it?"
"EASTER!"
"And what else?"
"PASSOVER?"
"And what else?"

*long pause*

"OPENING DAY!"

At which point the congregation started singing "Take me out to the ballgame."

Other notes: The service opened with a bit of Vivaldi's "Spring". Three of the choirs performed. There was a puppet show. KJ got to pet a rabbit. Spoke with the head minister (who mentioned the Spaceman had preached there last summer), the volunteer coordinator (who came to say hi) and some other folks. They did our favorite Easter hymn, though since it was the UU version I could only sing along with the "Alleluia"s. We departed because [livejournal.com profile] teinedreugan was fried and KJ was trending towards nap, through a milling crowd of small people hunting eggs and cans (the cans presumably for donation); as we drove past on the way home I saw several of the kids up a tree.

[livejournal.com profile] artan_eter just wandered in with KJ and said, "So, it's kind of meta, but she won't eat food, but she will eat the food processor."

Baby was gnawing on the lid to the Cuisinart.

In other news, there were ducks swimming in my backyard today, I am told.

(It was notably more chaotic on my end than it appears. She also navigated off the chat window several times, attempted to bookmark it thrice, kept toggling between Opera and the OSX Dashboard, and turned the screen brightness up and down a lot. And some of the great stuff - like the one with a capital omega in it - got vanished in her websurfing.)
After reading a post by [livejournal.com profile] green_knight, I said this in a chat window:

17:48:48 * Kiya sighs, adds another book to her wishlist.
17:48:57 ‹Kiya› This is one my father will get me as soon as he notices I want it.
17:49:10 ‹Kiya› He probably already has two copies and will give me whichever one is more beat-up.

I then realised that this is kind of ... a tidy summary of his and my natures.
