"According to a late Egyptian text cited by Bonnet, one of the characteristics of the griffin would be the beak of a falcon; his ears would be taken from a fish and his tail would be a snake."

Fish ears present on the outside as round scales among the other scales. Inside they have otoliths, the size of which is a common measurement scientists use to study lots of things about fish populations.

However, I have seen medieval depictions of mythical animals with ears shaped like fish pectoral fins.
