I picked up a couple of books to do some research for the calendar portion of the OH project. One of them was a reprint of an article, which I thought was disappointing, but hey, it'd be a quick read ...

... it notes that the Medinet Habu calendars and the Edfu calendars have the Sothic rising in different months.

And while I'm dealing with the emotional fallout from this someone on TC posts a, "So does every pagan religion use the Wheel of the Year?" thread, to which I was tempted to reply "I WISH."

Fucking calendars, how do they work?

Here's a question then:

When were the Medinet & Edfu calendars used? In different periods or such?
Considering the timespan of the AE civilization, Sopdet might have conceivably changed when it rose, just as the constellations change in time as we move through the Universe.

Anyways, it's a thought.

On the flip side, you can always just use the actual calculations of when Sopdet does rise astronmically, then use that as the beginning of whichever calendar you decide to use.

When making my calendar, all I did was put the festivals in and then calculate it from there. All of the AE temples calculated it differently from where Sopdet rose though from where their own temple or the Nisut's residence throughout AE history so none of it was totally uniform.

Wow, did that make any sense? I don't think I'm so coherent right now.

Every one is a little different. The point, of course, is to measure out the year. But everyone did it a bit differently.
