I tried to write a villanelle once but couldn't think up enough rhymes for the key line I wanted to use. (Late in series 2 of Doctor Who, the Master says "I never could resist a ticking clock" and I noticed that was iambic pentameter.)
I wrote one for the Traveller's Guide and after I had managed that my emotional reaction was approximately "I have now down that once and I can declare it a bucket list item and never do it again" and I am, to say the least, moderately cross at showerbrain for providing me with an ineffably compelling refrain line.
(That is a good line to work with though, for a refrain line.)
I find it much easier to pilfer a word bank and then work with a stack of thematically appropriate words and see how they compose together than try to freeform all the lines. I like RhymeZone.
"I never could resist a ticking clock" I haven't seen any Doctor Who in some years now, but I remember the line and some vague context. Villanelles lend themselves to a nice obsessive-sense, so are a very good Master form. I'm not sure this is quite on-point for theme, but it's good enough for me to abandon, feel free to tinker or mangle or steal lines if you want to make it your own.
I never could resist a ticking clock that drives me above all to Master time deep rhythm through the eons that we stalk
To find me in whatever When I dock Just follow to that sweet alluring chime I never could resist a ticking clock
those schemings for control that you must block all serve that pounding so I closer climb deep rhythm through the eons that we stalk
I strive break the universal lock that I may chain its power in its prime I never could resist a ticking clock
and patterns in the tempo when we talk reminds me that our rivalry is rhyme deep rhythm through the eons that we stalk
when next we meet anew on distant rock look kindly when you judge me for my crime I never could resist a ticking clock deep rhythm through the eons that we stalk
