I attend the sort of church

where the senior minister posts to the church announcements mailing list an email titled "frog pooping & puking videos".

It was relevant to his sermon.

There's something very comforting about the church year starting up again really.

(Also I am going to desperately miss John when he retires this year. Alas.)

Recent NYTimes article about beetles which, when swallowed by frogs, manage to survive the process either by inducing vomiting or crawling to, well, the other end of the frog before digestion can complete. (The phrase "tickle the cloacal sphincter" was involved in the sermon.)

He suggested that the beetles' emergence, "soiled, but alive" was an excellent metaphor for, well, living through 2020.

I had a great uncle who was a Catholic priest. He had one sermon that he kept handy that included an old Burger King commercial. "You need both hands to hold onto a Whopper? Well, you need both hands to hang onto the Kingdom of Heaven!"

Which I always thought was kind of awesome, too.
