Lately I've been thinking of the following:

Elves would be Abyssinians, Boromir would be a Russian Blue or a Main Coon. The Riders of Rohan could be Russian Blues---Eomer for instance!!
The hobbits could be those little cats they breed with short legs. Gimli could be a Himalayan--oh-so-hairy!
