Just ... completely frazzled, trying to get through the weekend. Next week, maybe I'll have time to remember how to be sane again.

While in the middle of trying to negotiate an emotionally complex situation that has one a little shaky is a less than ideal time to spend a while locked out of the house.

Went to the very good restaurant I have been wanting to get teinedreugan to tonight by using brooksmoses's visit as an excuse, and rescued arawen from whispercricket's parents along the way.

Discussion on rasfc makes me want to take the "You can't study magic unless you're really dedicated" trope and build a world in which magical success and capacity depends on raw lust for power ...

To me, 'really dedicated' and 'raw lust for power' are two sides of the same coin, and I'm not certain you can always tell the difference.

I've got a world that has far too few mages because anyone who has another interest - such as bringing up a child, looking after an elderly relative, being together with a spouse, not to mention earning a living and supporting other family members - has been thoroughly discouraged. There's a very small group of people who can - and wants to - give up ten or twelve years of their life doing nothing other than studying, and in the process joining the households of strangers. They're almost exclusively young males of independent wealth.

What a waste of talent.
