I spotted a mockingbird today, in the brambly area to one side of our land. It flew up from near the end of the driveway into the trees, and I didn't see where it went from there. Mockingbird!

I don't know that I can explain this usefully. It's one of those things that hits some of my visceral comfort zones -- I am Supposed To Live Where There Are Mockingbirds. The obnoxious bastard birds. I love them dearly.

That being said, I don't know how I am, really. It's been an emotional up and down in a pretty rough way the last few days, and I haven't been sleeping well. The hip, at least, cleared up to a dull ache fairly promptly, so I was walking fine after aspirin and sleeping it off. Cane is still propped up next to the house shrine in case I need it.

I am suspecting at this point that I'm going to need to declare an I Fail At E-Mail due to my having lost track of all my backlog in all the crazy. Meh.

[livejournal.com profile] arawen gave me a driving lesson today. First time I'd been behind the wheel in eleven years, ish.

I am Supposed To Live Where There Are Mockingbirds.

My father says that when he was growing up, the mockingbird was strictly a southern bird and didn't occur in Massachusetts.

They've been in the area at least 20 years. We had some living in a large patch of bramble bushes.

[livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I are very fond of mockingbirds--even if they have been fooling him by singing robin songs--and used to having them around.

I can't have mockingbirds up here, of course. But I like seeing the Stellar's Jays that everyone else rants about. They are such a vivid blue, and actually far shier and less obnoxious than regular jays.

Birds!

I've never had much of a connection to birds. I would guess that my strongest connection is to sparrows or owls. I always liked being outside at night and watching the owls hunt mice in the cow pasture.
