I feel terribly boring and like I don't have anything much to say. Life entirely consumed by house stuff.

On the up side, I took a few minutes and completed a minor thing that I'm doing for me that's been on my to-do list for ages and hadn't gotten around to -- racked the faerie mead and added the jasmine essence. With a little luck that'll unstick the ferment. I also remembered to talk to [livejournal.com profile] eyebrowsmcgee about systematics for a little bit, so more stuff to organise my thoughts on that project. Ordered a book. Stuff. Making space for my damn life in among all this moving shit.

Spent a while rummaging around doing research about freelancing jobs, which was half useful and half extremely frustrating. My finding-things-on-the-web skills are not terribly good.

Need to get the last two rooms of the house finished into showable condition by Saturday. Whee.

Still cranky and overloaded, but doing better. Probably due to getting out of the house Saturday and Monday. Will be out of the house most of the day Thursday, too, having a life and all. Terribly exciting.

Whitney says, "Okay, musical plausibility thing that's always bothered me, and I just need to express it now."
Whitney says, "If you own an opera house that has been shut down by a masked sociopath living in the basement, and you are celebrating the reopening, WHY throw a ... masked ball?"
Brooks [[livejournal.com profile] brooksmoses] says, "The masked man is a hypnotist, and made you do it?"
Brooks says, "Or else you have this Grecotragical need to laugh in the faces of the Fates?"
Whitney says, "The masked man is, arguably, a hypnotist, but he hadn't shown any interest in messing with the minds of the owners, just one of the performers."
Whitney says, "I am fairly sure that the essential reason is Thematic Arcs. But that doesn't make it not _clumsy writing_."
    Brooks says, "Well, yes."
Whitney says, "This has bothered me since I was, like, thirteen."
Brooks says, "[livejournal.com profile] suzimoses says she asked one of her teachers about that once, but all she got was a shrug."
Whitney says, "I'm glad that someone else is bothered by this."
Whitney says, "This rantlet brought to you by the relevant part of the musical coming up on random shuffle. It may now end, for the random shuffle is now playing Freddie Mercury duetting with David Bowie."

To be fair, there is a masked ball in the original novel. But it was a random masked ball, one of many thrown at the Opera House on account of it being a handy place for such affairs, nothing to do with the management. (In fact, Leroux doesn't even mention the Opera House being shut down due to chandelier problems. Then again, Christine is rather preoccupied for the next couple weeks, and Raoul is hardly a reliable witness.)
