There is/was a corner of my basement that was pretty much rotting from within, complete with massive mold/mildew colonies. The drywall was ... it was not solid. The pink fluffy insulation was, in fact, black.
Firebombing it was appealing, but mostly it was taken apart with a sledgehammer and saws and miscellaneous other stuff. I wasn't around for much of it, as a) I am severely allergic to the basement even when it's not being actively dismantled, b) there were four breather masks and five people, and c) I was responsible for causing food.
The workbench was taken down; the really ucky drywall was taken apart and I think the stuff behind it cleared out (when I headed upstairs it was when arawen was hauling out a roll of *black* pink fluff), but teinedreugan has suggested I shouldn't go down for a few days.
The stuff we wanted to get done -- taking out the wall that was rotten and the stuff behind it, breaking down the workbench and stuff -- has all been done. The wall needs to be bleached to kill off the remaining icky stuff. There will probably be other de-walling and re-walling at some point, but this has been more or less done.
Yay basement destruction! (Did you have a VW bus with which to haul in the implements of deeestruction and to haul out the garbage? It is, after all, only a couple of days until Thanksgiving.)

Well, I suspect it was more controlled than letting Keyspan do it by accident!
