myles_otter had that happen to him once. Mythbusters "proved" it couldn't be done; they were wrong, wrong, wrong. I love them dearly, but sometimes they're just wrong.
I'm generally fairly reluctant to touch the Windows machine in a technical way, because I don't speak the language, and I'm afraid of breaking things. However, I had detailed instructions about how to install, and installing Windows is (normally) a straightforward sort of thing, so we figured it'd be okay . . . .
Oh, I believe (http://www.powerlabs.org/cdexplode.htm). (Pointed this direction (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sigma7/205595.html?thread=399643#t399643) by davidgoldfarb!)
My high-school pal had a Van Halen CD explode in her boom box during the Pamela Smart trial, which she took to be Incontrovertible Proof that Ms. Smart was, in fact, guilty (Van Halen's "Starry Eyes" was apparently Ms. Smart's "song" with one of the two boys she hired to kill her husband). There's probably still a talismanic chunk of it on the shelf in my bedroom back in MA.
On a different, but related, note I got rather warm fuzzed after the phone call this afternoon. Kevin had told me about the mishaps and frustrations, and I came out to find Brooks a few minutes later telling me the story from your perspective. I don't know why exactly, but it was very warm fuzzed feeling.
Recently, I got a disc from Netflix that had trouble playing. It had a small crack in the center, but I figured that was probably safe enough to try out in my iMac, despite it being a whatever-speed drive. Luckily, I was right.

I think "the CD-ROM exploded" wants to become part of my vocabulary, like "the database server caught fire". Do you mind if I borrow it?

Me, shakily: . . . help?
Him: What?
Me: The CD-ROM just exploded. . .
Him: What? How literal are you being?
Me: . . . very . . .

(And my out-loud reaction has frightened the budgies over to the other side of the cage, too!)
