I sometimes I say I had culture shock when I moved a quarter turn around the Beltway at the age of ten. I've confirmed my memory somewhat -- the demographics of where I spent my single digits are a bit different from where we moved to. (Heh. They have 'North Potomac' on that map. Still pretentious.)

And earlier this evening I responded to a copy of Life of Brian with an urge to watch it. Because, y'know, it's festive. And seasonal!

[livejournal.com profile] teinedreugan and I did some early wintergifting (I had a present for him; he had his for me), so we swapped things today. This means that much of my evening has been occupied with reading Egyptian Adventures: Hamunaptra. It's actually surprisingly well-written, and doesn't make a complete hash of the mythology while transferring it to pop Egyptiana. (Though there are a couple of real cringers in there -- like the summary of the Amarna period being of the cult of Amon trying to establish formal monotheism . . .) I keep reading bits and having NPCs suddenly manifest in the back of my head, so I may wind up trying to run some things there sometime. If I ever get an idea for a plot. (Which means I need a plot for this and the half-formulated Slavic myth campaign notion.)

There was other stuff, I'm sure, but I'm going to go have a nervous breakdown now instead of trying to remember it.

ETA: Oh yeah. Melek Taus on the brain. I should have ordered those books [livejournal.com profile] loreleyjacob recommended about the Yezidis last time I had book money. Augh.

Resulted in finding a pretty glaze, though. (S'the one called 'Turquoise Silky Matt' in the 'other' section of this site. Can't link direct to the recipe because I don't have the brains to break it out of frames.)

Thanks for letting me look at Hamunaptra. I should get my copy within the next few weeks, but I've been impatient to see it for months now. ;-) And thanks again to you and [livejournal.com profile] teinedreugan for giving me something cool to distract myself with until then.

Just a couple of thoughts from me, and bear in mind that I'm a Faery *student,* not an initiate:

I think Melek Ta'us and the Blue God are separate yet resonant Gods. (I prefer "resonant" or resonating to the idea of a more tangible connection--and I also see a deep connection between Music and Magick, but that's a separate topic.)

I've read some of the Yezidi material--we have it all here in the Library--and although I do want to go back and look at the texts again, the lore the Yezidi hold for Melek T feels very very different from how He manifests for us. That's hardly surprising giving the extreme cultural differences between pluralistic postmodern Amerika and the tribal Yezidi cultural ambient.

It would be interesting to discuss this with Thorn. She obviously feels a connection with the Yezidi given what she chose for her LJ handle.

You ever talked to [livejournal.com profile] spearcarrier? She has a lot of information on the Yezidi and Malek Taus.
