Comment for the night: 'Suede and steel' is, indeed, a compelling phrase, but not, I think, for something outside a BDSM porn revue.

Describing one of my characters: She's being light and whimsical about something in such a way that the whimsy is like a veneer over something very sharp and probably about to be inserted in someone's kidney.

Revelation of the evening: For those who have never felt a need to discover the answer to the profound question: how difficult is it to put a band-aid on a pinky toe? There is an answer! The answer is 'It's sufficiently annoying that if you can manage to avoid ever being in that situation, do so. Trust me.'

Section 19: 1521 words (done). That would be 920 today, I think.

Oh, I can see other contexts for "suede and steel" easily, several of them in fact. I have some people in my head who are like that all the time. Metaphorically, anyway. Literal contexts are slightly harder.
