We have a fan for the downstairs now. I have no idea if it's circulating air from the upstairs into here (the upstairs being air-conditioned and all), but at least the living room is no longer a stagnant pond of misery.

Spent a long time prowling around a bookstore. Found something random for [livejournal.com profile] erispope, which is nice, because usually it's her finding random stuff for me. (Like large books about parrots, with illustrations.) I spent a while looking to see if I could find anything useful about the history of Christian heresies, and failed; I spent a lot longer trying to see if I could find anything useful about the history of Irish mysticism and the Sight, and found a lot of Get L33t Magickall Skillz By Getting In Touch With Your Inner Irish Flake books.

Wound up getting a book on the development of eclecticism as a major component of modern religious and spiritual practice in the States (which was commended to my attention by someone I met at the BA-RASF* meeting), The Book of Taltos by Steve Brust (because it has Phoenix in it, which I don't have and can't find; the fact that I've misplaced my copy of Taltos and wanted to reread it is merely incidental), and a blank journal to start a dream journal in.

Today's proof that editors are, indeed, mortal: a complaint that it's improper to come up with a gender-neutral phrasing for "All men are brothers" because it would convert all heterosexual sex into incest. Buh. I replied, "Is there some reason I'm missing that this particular overreaching of interpretation should founder in particular upon the presumably sacred shores of heterosexuality?" Obsheesh: Sheesh.

I now have a mental moment of trying to turn "Have you washed the popcorn pot?" into something like a filk of "Have you seen the muffin man?", which is mutating weirdly off the discussion of popovers at Aunt Chris's place last Christmas dinner. (I was very proud of that joke, but only my father got it. *heavy sigh* Well, it just goes to show we're related.)

Speaking of Generic Winter Solstice Holiday, I'm waiting anxiously for the box I sent [livejournal.com profile] oneironaut to arrive. It being a really distinctly belated GWSH gift, combined with a really distinctly belated birthday gift, combined with sheer randomness and no real excuse as to why it got postponed from February to the end of June. But the soonest it'll potentially arrive is tomorrow, so I gloat quietly. Or not so quietly.

We went to the pet store on the way to the mall, because I asked Kevin if we could stop and ogle the snakies and birdies. Because, well, that's what I do. I wouldn't get a parrot from a pet store (I might get a budgie if I wanted a budgie, but I don't, and besides a budgie would definitely have Cat Issues), but it was nice to see that they're handfeeding the babies -- there were babies! Lots of them! And the conures were all in a stack, and the dusky conure at the bottom was complaining quite mightily about its sun conure siblings, oh yes. And there were a pair of baby Greys, and quite a lot of lovebirds, some of them playing wrestle-under-the-mat-on-the-cage-bottom. Kevin thought the bright red lory was pretty; they are, they've got vibrant colours like I can hardly believe, red that's hardly real. Technicolour birds. I got whistled at by a finch.

There was a five-gerbil pyramid in one of the nearby enclosures, which was disturbingly amusing. Circus-trained gerbils. And there were rather a few ferrets; a pair were wrestling in the two-month-old cage, and one was very unhappy that its sib was attempting to chew off its ears.

The reptile end of the store wasn't very exciting. I think there was only one royal (maybe two), and it was hiding. There were a couple of pretty collared lizards that only moved when nobody was looking. And a gigantic redtail (I mean as big around as my hands can span, by the look of her, I think I remember the redtail being female) who had just shed. I think she's something like eight feet long. Tree frogs always look extruded to me. And Kevin asked me how big beardies get, and I didn't know. I may have to look that up. The slider was hiding under a rock; usually they have more than one slider.

We got a new collar for Lennon, as he took off the last one. Last time he took off the last one I could find it and put it back on; this time, no dice, so he's been without for a month or two. We're trying to get them used to collars-with-bells-on now so it doesn't get associated with the move and the possibility of bird if I should get the parrot I wish for. (The bells being for the bird's benefit, and me not being willing to consider getting the bird before we move, we just don't have the setup in this house. So a few years yet on the bird front.)

It's still damn hot. But now there's a _fan_.

And I shall make popcorn, if I can get this Arthur off my elbow.
