Was it at your place, [livejournal.com profile] thewronghands?

Anyway. Interesting review of Zero Dark Thirty.

Yes, that was me! Hmm. That's similar to if not the same as my objections; I probably still won't see it because I doubt I'd be able to sit through a realistic torture scene, though I didn't know that was in there when I made my initial comments. I don't even do most Tarantino movies because they're unwatchably gutwrenching for me, much less horror movies or dramas that linger on that aspect of things. The trailer that I saw (all that I knew of the movie at the time of posting) I read as America-fuck-yeah propaganda, and that left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm obviously vested in women breaking in to the boys' clubs, and that's an area related to my field, but I don't think having a strong female lead is enough to get me there when the end result is so difficult for me to swallow. Accepting a role where you'll only get partial information and you must follow orders even if you don't like them often makes you partially culpable for the results of whatever gets done with your work, even if such was not your intention. (It is probably a good thing that I'm not in the military or in intelligence proper; I suspect I'd have these problems with working in any of the available institutions.) Since I'm not fond of assassination as foreign policy, it's not a movie I want to go out and see.
