So ardaniel mentioned to me about one of the latest "OMG women are getting cooties in my fandom" explosions, and Scalzi commented on it today, and now I'm pondering that some time in the future I might actually go to cons where cosplay happens once more. (I mean, it's been an age since I visited erispope and we used to do Dragon*Con.)

And so, in honor of all the misogynistic twitbrains who are deeply disturbed by those sexy sexy womens in their revealing costumes, I have a desire ...

... to cosplay a topless woman who wears a lot of jewelry.

By which I mean...

Pyanfar Chanur.

Cherryh is my favorite author, but many people find her prose opaque. The Chanur series is arguably some of her more accessible stuff, I think? I am a poor person to speak to this because I find her prose perfectly comprehensible....

It is a space opera in which all of the main characters are hani, by which I mean that lovely leonine lady as pictured in the link. (And 'lady' is relevant - they are lion-based, conceptually, which means that the women think the men are just too emotionally unstable to do any real work, and anyway they're temporary and mostly just look pretty, a new young stud will come by and gank the clan chief sooner or later.)

Pyanfar Chanur is the captain of the Pride of Chanur (also title of first book in the series) who is thrown into complicated interstellar politics when this strange near-hairless biped escapes from someone else's spaceship and runs into her lower decks.... Turns out he's from an undiscovered alien species! And he's really, really weird-looking, though at least they convinced him not to cut his mane and beard.

"Opaque" isn't quite the right word. I'm quite capable of getting meaning from it; it's just that doing so is a joyless slog. She has for me the opposite of what Jo calls "I-want-to-read-itosity".

I have to admit that I haven't tried The Pride of Chanur specifically.

I didn't much care for the Chanur series, but I love the idea. I could also see going as a Caliban-rider, and dropping all stones if anyone brought up the topic. ;)

I realized recently that both the costumes I've considered doing in the next year for conventions are full body leather catsuits. Some combination of modesty, armor, and I-will-kill-you-if-you-look-at-me. Only one of them is *actually* covered in spikes... but if I do DragonCon again (as I've been meaning to for years), I am so going as Scarab.
