Hormonal fluctuations can play hell with the whole internal regulatory system. An auto mechanic friend of mine likens menopause, for instance, to changing from regular gas to high-octane and then back to regular, all in the course of a few minutes. (She also refers to her own hot flashes as "engine knocking...)
Blood pressure goes wonky. And it skyrockets during labor, which can cause (1) unpleasant sensations for you and (2) weird, borderline-psychotic behavior in attending nurses. Presumably, it can cause problems for the Kidlet, but it's hard to sort that out from the bizarre behavior of the nurses.
Apparently, there are rules against answering direct questions asked by a woman in labor. Instead, they're supposed to answer the question they think you wanted to ask. And soothe you. They're big on trying to sound soothing.
"When will the doctor get here?" "Don't worry, dear; everything's fine."
"What does that device do?" "We're just trying to help you be comfortable. Relax."
Erm. This has gotten a bit tangential to pregnancy symptoms.

(I've had nurses ask me how I was capable of consciousness and verticality at my blood pressure.)

(My BP's 110/70 on a *half* dose of ACE inhibitors-- but without 'em, it's 145/90.)
