I've seen those. I had one at one point. I don't know what your friend's one is like. Mine was kind of cheap and threw me off the screw-type design, which is why I got rid of it. It was a 1.5', inflexible pakistani blade and required about three turns to draw. Properly done for potential use a sword cane is an instant-draw weapon. First you're not armed, then you are, instantly. Much like iaido - fast, smooth, draw/ready/strike in one motion. I just don't see that with a screw-based securing system, though I could be wrong with a better designed one.
I just think it's kind of a neat item. Not that I have any intention of carrying one around on a regular basis. I've become rather snobby over the years about my weapons.
