[livejournal.com profile] teinedreugan and I went out to dinner at Mary's, which apparently approximately half of the Boston area thought would be a cool idea at the same time.

Right after we were seated, a pair of smalls, all bundled up in their cold weather gear, came trundling by with a chair. They had apparently liberated it from one of the central tables and were going to push it until stopped, sliding it back first along the carpet as that way the seat was at the right level for both contributors to push. Where they happened to wind up stopped was right next to our booth, as the crowdedness permitted no further progress; they responded to this by carefully pushing the chair under the table at the end, patting it lightly, and informing us, "Chair!"

Parents pointed out that there were only two of us, and we were both sitting down, so we didn't need a chair. "Chair!" said the smalls, with enthusiasm.

Eventually small children were herded away by significantly nonplussed parents, who also returned the chair to whatever table near the front of the restaurant had misplaced it.

"Chair!"

It was awfully cute.

[ Processing much life. But the smalls needed to be remembered. Chair! ]

What great kids!

I've read enough old stuff that smalls, to me, meant underwear, and I needed to parse-reparse to figure it out.

It's great that someone remembers these things!

I've heard "wee smalls" referring to kidlets before, so I suspect it's not unique... The story is so cute I made Rob read it, too.

Right! You are in Boston. I thought you were. I am too, but not for long (my flight leaves tomorrow at 7pm).

Are you feeling functional enough to do lunch tomorrow somewhere?

From: [identity profile] baratron.livejournal.com

I've only got public transit as well. Hrm. I'm starting from up at Davis on the red line.

I can't deposit my luggage at the airport because they have no left luggage because of "security". I don't think I want to wander around the place with several large bags, because that's just too impractical. Also my flight turns out to be at 18:05, not 19:05 as I had thought. So I really need to be at the airport by 3.30pm or so.

All that having been said, lunch is still a possibility, as long as I'm not obsessed with the idea of trying to "see" Boston in the morning. The purpose of my trip is to see people, and seeing the towns are somewhat secondary to that :) Today, the first restaurant (a Tibetan) we went to did several things I could eat (and did them very well). Generally speaking, Asian food is good. Any Chinese/Japanese that does vegetarian stuff is ok (as all Chinese vegetarian stuff is dairy-free by default, and egg is usually optional), Indian is ok if on reading the menu you don't see every single veggie item containing descriptions like "a creamy sauce" or "cooked in butter". Also, if you don't mind going somewhere that only sells vegan food (depending on what particular food issues you have - if soy or gluten are problems I wouldn't recommend it) I have a specific recommendation for this place:

Grasshopper
1 N Beacon St (at Allston-Brighton)
617-254-8883

No idea how to get there from here, but I can ask my native to help :)

I can probably give you his phone number so you can call something that's not an international number (if you want to), but I'd have to check that's ok first.

Apparently Grasshopper is a PITA to get to from here because it means basically going through the entire middle of the city and back out the other side! The Boston T system is decidedly lacking in suitable crossover points...

I'm fairly confident of my ability to find food at any random half-decent Chinese-type place, so it's not necessary to try to get there. I'm going to email you the phone number (it belongs to [livejournal.com profile] pir, who I believe you are at least aware of the existence of from poly-Boston ;) ) and we can work something out in the morning. I have to go to bed now, because I was up at Stupid o'clock this morning and am pretty darn dead now :/

I have to avoid bookshops! and record shops! and game shops! (although the latter is the most flexible for peeling off packaging and pretending I owned it all along) because I have precisely $3 left before I reach my duty-free allowance. You are only allowed to take 145 UKP worth of stuff into the UK, and if you exceed that you have to pay duty and VAT (tax) on ALL OF IT, not just the part that is over 145 pounds... Duty + VAT together add about 30% to the cost of things! So I MUST NOT go to shops where I would be tempted to spend, spend, spend... :(

That does sound terribly, terribly cute, too.

squee!

I'm actually reminded of our "nose" habit. Just making sure you knew what was going on you know.

Our small tried to use the stool as a walker yesterday, for about two steps before I told her to stop. Whether her stopping and sitting then was obliging me, or just getting tired, is still up for debate. ;-) But I can see her trying something like those kids did someday (and sooner than we think, I'm sure).
