On the right hand, there is Zep Tepi. The place of origin, the birth moment of all, the place in which true names are spoken truly, where everything is in the correct place. The primal mound, the center of creation. It is always there, always available, if only we go back to the beginning, align with the heart, and proceed out. To let ma'at ascend into its shrine -- to refrain from impeding it -- to act in accordance with the truth written into the soul. To move from the center, going forth from the beginning, the perfection of creation, knowing balance and thus knowing how best to apply oneself. It is pure, untainted by that which should not be present, clean.

On the left hand, there is the Black Heart of Innocence, the primordial nature, the true self without artificiality, without boundary, manifesting as it truly is: manifesting through the eyes of a child or the eyes of a lover. The truth of the self manifests, open and real and present and powerful, and its life does not bow to that which would force it to submit. It is wild, unconstrained by the fake and false, untainted by warping, clean.

The heart, as always, is in the center, where it can be weighed and found true.

And the back of my mind recites the verse from The Left Hand of Darkness to me, quietly, over and over. And also:

    Apollo, the god of light, of reason, of proportion, harmony, number--Apollo blinds those who press too close in worship. Don't look straight at the sun. Go into a dark bar for a bit and have a beer with Dionysios, every now and then. --Ursula K. Le Guin

The Left Hand of Darkness verse

Praise then Stone, and the basis of being;
Praise then Earth, and that rooted is life;
Praise then Water, and the ebb and the flowing
Praise then the Wood, for the green and the growing
Praise then the Ice, that life has ending;
Praise then Fire, and impulse of making;
Praise then Air, and the myriad of voices;
Praise then Light, and the persistence of vision;
Praise then Darkness, and Creation unfinished.

turned into that in my head some years ago now.

Thought you might like it.
