The section of links to previous session summaries was getting gigantic, and I'm still a half dozen or so sessions behind, so it'll only get larger. If you want to get to the first fifteen sessions, the full set of links is available on previous entries.
Gotta catch up on summaries because I don't want to tell that joke out of context!
Things exploded. Lots of things exploded, and there was the smell of burnt meat. We could see the figure floating in the air above us. I made one of my magics for hiding, and Karas got ready, and Adosar moved off too, all of us separate, because the Alar was throwing huge balls of fire.
I took shelter up against a building as he landed, still shouting for Semtek. It was Jezerain, the crazy one, the one whose energies were enough out of control that he might accidentally break something really important in the webbing of the world.
Karas used one of his magics to make himself look like Semtek, and Adosar made illusions, and I lurked, shooting at him and missing a lot. Jezerain made a spell to protect himself, and then just walked away from where it was so it collapsed -- it was like he wasn't able to keep a thought straight for more than a moment at a time. He tried to shove Karas out of his way, and Karas doesn't shove well. I gave up on shooting and went to join the fighting with the sword; Wren can shoot much better than I can anyway.
He made a spell over in the direction Wren was, and I heard Hethian scream. I hoped he was all right, but I was sort of busy, even if I wasn't accomplishing anything. Jezerain realised that he was getting hurt, we saw that cross his expression, and he started to make a magic -- Adosar told me later that it was the same magic as his space-walking spell, the one we used to travel to where the rock was. He was shouting that he didn't want to be locked up again, trapped again. Making the magic in the middle of fighting Karas didn't work at all, though, he got muddled up, and then Karas stuck his spear through him.
Jezerain exploded. Knocked me down. Wren came running by to make sure I wasn't dying, and then went running around to see if she could help any of the people he'd thrown fire at.
Adosar used his shaping magics to make a monument where the fight had been, even though I think the Breveddi can be trusted to remember that sort of thing. Still, rocks are rocks, they last a while.
People were pretty shocked. I mean, it's one thing to know that we're out there killing Alar and they need to be prepared for that sort of thing and another thing entirely to have Jezerain come storming into the village and start exploding cattle. Karas decided that he needed to do something about that, so he got organised and got ready to start telling stories and things about what was going on.
While he was in the big hall, I prowled around, and wound up listening from under the window, because it's good to be home, and under windows is the sort of thing I do at home. I need to keep track of where I came from and all.
Karas was talking, doing a good show like he always does. This was made somewhat more dramatic by the fact that he started glowing. Pretty impressively, by the time he hit the climax of his story.
That was sort of odd. We asked him if he knew he was doing it, and he said no, so we'll have to see whether he does it again later.
We spent some time getting organised and getting information about the ork tribes that had come down off the plains, collecting stories and the like. Wren and I got to discussing magic at one point, and about why her magic doesn't like worked metal and mine, which is much the same, doesn't have any problem with it at all. And then she was looking at me really funny, and I had to ask her why.
She said I'd said something, and I hadn't, so I asked her what she thought I'd said. And she said that I'd talked about how the magic of the natural world has certain patterns it wants to go in, the the druids get their magic from making promises to the patterns that it wants to go in, and other people get their magic other ways. And people-made things change the flows from the way they want to go in.
We tried to explain to Adosar why people are beavers later, but I don't think he really got it.
Eventually we went north to find some orks. We found the encampment of one tribe, and one of them rode out to meet us. Karas said that he'd handle this, and that's what loremasters are for, knowing how to talk to people and all, so he did. They rode back and forth a bit, showing off their horsemanship and skill, and made a few jousting passes at each other. Then the ork welcomed us into the camp.
(I'm pretty sure the context for the session quote from Adosar: "It's not an alien concept, just a stupid one" may have to do with his reaction to the ritual combat before entering the encampment.)
We talked to them a bit, and spent time and traded shiny things, and Karas told them about the plains on the other side of the mountains, the huge plains, beautiful orkish territory, with no orks in. But lots of hobgoblins, which could use being fought at a bit. They were happy where they were, but the news would get passed along to other tribes which were less happy.
We got the names of a few ork tribes that were still up on the plains, and news about the things coming out from across the plateau. Fire demons and monsters of various sorts, and it's hard to tell whether people who're reporting that sort of thing are telling stories like Karas does, with all the exciting bits a little larger and brighter-coloured. They hadn't really seen any, it was people on the other side of the people on the other side who had been driven out, and everybody moved away from the problem.
We started for the plateau to talk to the Plains Cat tribe.
