It was created by suzimoses, who gave me the original cross-stitch as a wintergift.

(Well, not all. I had to shrink the photo down lots and lots to get the image; a larger copy of the same image is here, for those people who want to be completely gobsmacked.)

*envious sigh* it takes me forever to do my cross-stitching, and i've never done anything as big as that! is it a Julie Hasler design? it's looking familiar... anyway, suzimoses seems to have done a wonderful job with it. and are those metallic threads i see trimming the edges? wow.

There are metallic threads all through it. It's incredible. I'm still feeling stunned. I asked her for permission to use it as a user icon earlier today. :) I don't know about the designs for the symbols, though I know this particular implementation is unique to our family. :} (Apparently she and brooksmoses were talking about how to implement the border a couple of days before it was done, even. Assuming I'm not misremembering.)

Assuming my memory is right, the Leo is me, Aquarius is lilairen, Sagittarius is brooksmoses, and Aries is suzimoses.

As keshwyn and teinedreugan figured out between them, I'm the Aquarius in the lower right, teinedreugan is the Leo in the lower left ("the partner" on alt.poly), suzimoses is Aries, upper left, ("the naiad" on alt.poly, though I don't know if you've been reading there since we agreed to a handle), and the Saggitarius is brooksmoses ("the beloved").

To expand on lilairen's explanation, the individual circular emblems are from a book of mythological cross-stitch patterns, although I've forgotten its name and author, but the arrangement and bordering are all original. It's done on 28-count black linen (as suzimoses will point out, a desk lamp with a magnifying glass in it is a very useful tool), and by my rough estimate, has somewhere over 25,000 stitches in it. And it did take most of a year to do; there were times when "forever" didn't seem a bad approximation!
