It only took me until ninth level, but.

That was a gaming session that didn't cause me exhaustion, which is good 'cos I've been running the ragged edge kind of all the time lately. But I basically got time off. It was good.

(KJ spent a bit of gaming time sitting in her high chair helping us eat the books. She was thrilled to be playing with us.)

But. I was effective in combat for approximately the first time ever. Possibly because this was my first opportunity to turn into a polar bear. (Polar bears: capable of Eating Your Head But Good.)

Scenario:

The party is preparing to camp for the evening in a traveller's waystation when we hear noise outside. Peering out the window we see a small squad of zombie ogres approaching. We do not approve of zombie ogres, so we prepare to attack.

Rogue goes out the front door, fighters go out the side door, to engage ogre. We overhear something spellcasting and a monster appears in front of the rogue, who yells for help and gives a vague location on the spellcaster.

Our wizard casts see invisible on Ari, and heads out the back door.

Ari to Iska, her wolf companion: Go help the halfling.

Iska, who considers the halfling subordinate in the local pack: Taking charge of the halfling!

Wolf goes out the front door and bites the thing attacking the rogue; Ari goes out the back door, turns into an eagle, and climbs for the sky, angling back towards the road where the spellcaster was reported. Both see the spellcaster.

Monster goes down to rogue attacks. Wolf says, "HRRRRRRRRRF." Which meant, roughly, "Turn on your speak with animals so I can give you your marching orders."

Wolf snarls something like, "The prey is over here, come stab it" and loped to attack the cleric, missing. The halfling trailed along after, activating the item so he could hear any further communication; Ari flew overhead, landed in the road behind the caster, and turned into a giant bear.

Meanwhile other party members flail at the ogres and the pair of drow fighters that attempted an ambush, which kept them largely busy, though the wizard took down two heavily injured zombies with a spell at a useful moment.

Spellcaster suspects that the wolf can see her as he was too focused to be tracking her by scent, but decides to ignore him and step around him to attack the rogue. Iska did not approve of this, and bit her on the ankle.

FACEPLANT.

Cleric hits an oh-shit spell and casts confusion, hitting both rogue and wolf. This was not an effective use of her time, as it turns out.

Also at that point the giant bear pounced her from behind and, with my l33t shapeshiftery combat powers, delivered a claw-claw-bite, attempted to initiate a grapple, but couldn't get a good grip on her.

Cleric lays some hurt on the halfling, becoming visible in the process.

Confused wolf attacks nearest target. (The cleric.)

Halfling shakes off the confusion a little, puts some stabbity on the cleric.

Bear splats cleric.

I love being a shapeshifter. Also love fishing through and digging stats for all kinds of things out of the Monster Manual because I can turn into great numbers of things.

Other moments of fun with shapeshifting in between events:

"Kelwyn, could I get some help with something?"
"What sort of something?"
"... something?"
"... okay..."
They retreated somewhere quiet.
"I'm going to turn into something, and I want you to stab me a little. Gently."
"... but I don't want to stab you!"
"... pleeeeease?"
Ari turns into a troll. Kelwyn delicately prodded the troll with a dagger. It made a wound, which bled a little.
"Hm. I don't have it right quite yet. Thanks!"
"... okay."

Some time later:
"Daven, could I get some help?" Daven is the dwarf fighter in the party.
"Sure?"
Ari turned into a dwarf.
"Did I do that right?" In dwarven, which she doesn't know she did yet.
".... uhhhh."
