A long time ago, at the height of the cold war, we had a discussion in a school history lesson. The question was "In the event of a nuclear war, who do you think will be the first to push the button?"
I thought then, and still do, that it would be America.
Why?
..... because American Politics has always been more reactionary than diplomatic. Unfortunately this type of politics is spreading round the world. Sooner or later something will give and the whole world will go to pot.
For those of us lucky enough to survive the war/natural disaster/revolution I hope that we will finally learn from the mistakes of the past and try to build a society that is tolerant of all, which is not based on outdated religious practices and bigotries.
Sadly I don't think Eutopia will ever exist.
I am glad you wrote this piece, it is a pleasant surprise to find that all Americans are not totally crazy ;)
