Was taking the trash out just in time to see a cat hit by a car. Or hear the whump-sound, think the car had blown a tyre, and seeing something that looked for a moment like a bit of busted tyre rolling in the center of the road.
Then I saw that it was a cat.
There was another car coming, but it slowed down; I went out and picked up the cat and moved it (probably her; I think she's the longhair tortie we see occasionally,
teinedreugan) to the grass next to the sidewalk.
The cat wasn't visibly bleeding, I wasn't sure if she was able to use her hindlegs, had her jaws open wide and tongue lolling. At a guess, that might have been the wind knocked out of her, I don't know.
Went in, thrashed around, found a number for local animal control that went to the North Shore Animal Hospital. They gave me the Lynn Police non-emergency line; I called that. Then I went out to sit with the cat.
Which had disappeared.
I went in to get the flashlight and look for her, and as I was coming out there was this horrible noise that I'm not sure if was animal or mechanical, some sort of scolding yarp. Failed to track that down. While
brooksmoses and I were looking around, a woman came by looking for "71?" We asked if she was here about the cat. It turned out that she'd been the one driving, had called the police, and had gotten told that it was in front of 71. We talked for a few minutes, a cop car came by, we established there was nothing anyone could do (especially in the absence of cat), the cop praised the woman for being the one in a hundred who wouldn't just drive on by, we dithered a bit, and everyone went their separate ways.
I've been out to look for her; she doesn't seem to be in the bush near where I put her down, which would be as far as I'd expect her to get if she were crippled. She was in the middle of the road and didn't have obvious blood, so here's hoping she just had the wind knocked out of her getting clipped by the bumper.
I hope she's okay.
Keep feeling there was something I could've done better, but . . .
Go hug a cat.
