At some point I will be able to articulate why it is that "Black Muddy River" has such intense spiritual resonance for me. ([livejournal.com profile] brooksmoses, you may recall that as one of the things I was singing snatches of when we were walking along the river a while back.)

I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side . . .

My current contemplation is that many people who want to make social arguments on the basis of the good of the children don't actually remember being children. I mean, take the whole "role model" argument -- anyone know a kid that only has parents as role models? Where are all the other relatives? How about the neighbours? Schoolteachers? Parents of friends? Other members of their temple/church congregation if relevant? Other people down at the community pool? Where are all these people? Hell, there are even adults on the telly, if one can reconcile that as a godawful source of models and yet wish to keep the kid locked in the closet and away from any other human contact.

Rar. If the kid needs to have all the important social roles modeled in the direct family, I'm all for being sure they all have a working mom and a stay at home mom and a company man dad and a hands-on dad, because otherwise they'd be Deprived Of Roles They Absolutely Need To Witness To Be Able To Make Reasonable Life Decisions As Adults.

Yeesh.
