May add more quotes over time. I'm trying to do a first pass all with books; I may do a second pass with song lyrics.
It's these little things, they can pull you under; live your life filled with joy and thunder.
"Sweetness Follows", R. E. M.
Who are you?
Light is the left hand of darkness
and darkness the right hand of light.
Two are one, life and death, lying
together like lovers in kemmer,
like hands joined together,
like the end and the way.
- The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin
I am made of the dust of the stars
And the oceans flow in my veins
Here I hide in the heart of the city
Like a stranger coming out of the rain.
- "Presto", Rush
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I
contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain
multitudes.)
- "Song of Myself", Walt Whitman
What do you look like?
I don't really care that much about "Beauties". What I really like are Talkers. To me, good talkers are beautiful because good talk is what I love. The word itself shows why I like Talkers better than Beauties, why I tape more than I film. It's not "talkies". Talkers are doing something. Beauties are being something. Which isn't necessarily bad, it's just that I don't know what it is they're being. It's more fun to be with people who are doing things.
- The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, Andy Warhol
What's your secret?
"Again, no offense." He surfaced, and kissed her with earnest affection. "See here, Priscilla, I have an interest in smell. That is, I have an interest in the evolution o' consciousness."
- Jitterbug Perfume, Tom Robbins
What do you want to be?
"'Earth's ecology is an interlocking system,' she used to say, 'and maybe humans aren't human without input from their old partners.' She wasn't sure about that. But she tried a lot of things."
- Cyteen, C. J. Cherryh
What can you do?
'You make us sound mad,' said Susan. A nice warm bed . . .
NO. YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT AREN'T TRUE. HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME? said Death, helping her up on to Binky.
- Hogfather, Terry Pratchett
What can't you do?
For a moment there I thought I saw the future; it pointed a trembling finger at me and told me to shut my yap.
- "Over Rough Terrain", Making Book, Teresa Nielsen Hayden
If I could wave my magic wand I'd make everything all right.
- "Presto" again
You can't run away forever, but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start.
- "Rock And Roll Dreams Come True", Meat Loaf
What is love?
It shocked and confused her, but she could not more have denied that desire than she could have stopped breathing, for she sensed the enormous potential singing unseen but inescapable between them. It wasn't sexual. Or, rather, it was sexual, but only as a part of the whole, for it went far, far beyond any sensual attraction. It was a hunger that went so deep and subsumed so much of her that sexuality had to be a part of it. No one had ever before evoked such an intense sense of shared capability within her, and she sensed the way they complemented one another, the unbeatable team they could become.
- In Enemy Hands, David Weber
I'll be all right
As long as it matters
As long as you're here with me now.
- "As Long as it Matters", Gin Blossoms
Love is an act of blood
And I'm bleeding
A pool in the shape of a heart.
- "Space Dye Vest", Dream Theater
What is friendship?
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
- "Little Gidding", T. S. Eliot
Are you strong?
To order, to govern,
is to begin naming;
when names proliferate
it's time to stop.
- #32, Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu (trans. Le Guin)
What are you afraid of?
In her impressive study of this text, Odette Renaud contends that it describes a psychopathological condition, "the first neurosis in world history". I myself would speak of despair. In a world where "connective justice" is the cardinal paradigm, solitude is a crisis that plunges the individual into the severest despair.
- The Mind of Egypt: History and Meaning in the Time of the Pharaohs, Jan Assman
What would you do with a million dollars?
The chuckle with which he said this, and the chuckle with which he paid for the turkey, and the chuckle with which he paid for the cab, and the chuckle with which he recompensed the boy, were only to be exceeded by the chuckle with which he sat down breathless in his chair again, and chuckled till he cried.
- A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens
What would you tell the one who loves you?
Tu lomo condesciende a la morosa
Caricia de mi mano. Has admitido,
Desde esa eternidad que ya es olvido.
- "A un gato", Jorge Luis Borges
What do you want to do?
If a lot of people receive who receive this letter plant a few seeds and a lot of people receive this letter, then a lot of seeds will get planted. Plant you seeds.
- The Principia Discordia, or How I Found Goddess, And What I Did To Her When I Found Her, the Magnum Opiate of Malaclypse the Younger
Where do you want to be?
a hopeless case if--listen:there's a hell
of a good universe next door;let's go
- "pity this busy monster,manunkind", e. e. cummings
What do you want?
Someday, I would like to look in the stars and say, "Damn. We did it."
- Ted Williams, in the introduction to Fenway: A Biography in Words and Pictures, by Dan Shaughnessy and Stan Grossfeld
