I am possessed of a strange urge to reread Pratchett's Jingo and a strange fear of doing so, because it's too, too true, right down to Lord Rustfeld.
I read Jingo recently and forgot all about it until you mentioned it, but you are so right. All the posturing and calling of names, the threat of random violence against people of Klatchian extraction, and normally good characters disliking and stereotyping Klatchians because they think it's patriotic. It would be great if Lord Vetinari was involved in this conflict. Then if not a happy ending there would at least be a less un-happy one.
At least this year (as opposed to 9/11) there doesn't seem to be any anti-Personwithskindarkerthanmine violence. At least not that I've seen in the news.
