Sort of. I have not yet seen the Zatoichi series, and kind of wish I had before I saw the remake, which is the one I had in mind. Here is Ebert's review:
The remake I found enjoyable without having seen the original, but Ebert's review suggests that having seen 2 or 3 of the original might increase appreciation of the remake. I saw it at the Landmark Embassy theater in Waltham, but it does not appear to be playing within a 40 mile radius of me anymore :( I'm sure it will come out on Netflix.
