Your process sounds suspiciously familiar. Usually I end up having to go back and make a timeline 40-60k words in when a reader asks "wait, that was yesterday?"
After many years of angsting over if I was "doing it all wrong" and "would never produce Real Writing that way" I found all the other writers saying "do whatever, fix it in revision" and that made more sense to me...
