Also really you need to have a reasonable sense of the Tanakh and have at least read-through the Zohar. The Scholem I gave you is a good text for getting a general sense of how standard mystic-speak can hook into those texts, or if you have the familiarity with those texts giving a starting intro-to-mysticspeak.
Of course there's gobs of information otherwise circulating, much of it not from the texts and much passed and filtered through Christian ceremonials. Hopefully people are at least passingly familiar with the background context. Otherwise it comes down to interpretations of interpretations, etc.
