One of the ideas on software management I've come across included slots for the optimistic brainstormer and the pessimistic cynic. They would give (so ran the theory) a much broader and more balanced set of ideas to the group as a whole than if everyone stuck to what they considered sensible, balanced options. I think it may be a similar sort of balance in duality to what you're describing here.
