Clarke Award Finalists 1999

1999: Both the new Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales have their first meetings, the Millennium Dome (certainly not a name that will rapidly date) is completed, and hard-working programmers strive to limit the effects of the Millennium Bug, unaware success will be rewarded with mass amnesia.

Stupid but true

I like to look at online real estate listings to see how people use interior spaces. I've come to the conclusions that:

A: Few people use more than 2000 square feet effectively. Above that, they seem to run out of ideas about how to use each room*.
B: Lots of houses have gratuitous features whose purpose seems to be to make them unusable to mobility impaired people.
C: (this is the stupid one) Townhouses are fine but I hate the idea of a duplex. For some reason, having to cooperate with 50 people bothers me more than having to get along with one specific person or family.

* More libraries is always the right answer.

There was a place for sale just up the road from me whose entire basement was given over to sturdy-looking bookcases.

Dreams of Dead Stars, Part III, ch. 7: A Chance to Rest

I must apologize profusely for the shortness of this chapter and the forthcoming delay, but for whatever reason this spring is absolutely kicking my ass in several directions, and it’s violently disrupted my writing schedule. So I’m going to be taking a break for the month of June, and work on getting back into the groove. The next chapter will be posted Sunday, July 6th. Thank you all so, so much for reading, commenting, and enjoying the story.

celiac test is negative

My GI doctor says the celiac test is negative. This is both unsurprising and a relief: the doctor ordered the test because of comorbidities, not because there were any signs of celiac, but celiac is common enough in people with collagenous colitis that it was worth checking.

I do still need to contact her office tomorrow and ask about that follow-up appointment.

Books Received, May 24 to May 30

Five books new to me: 4 novels, 1 collection, 3.5 fantasies, 1 horror, 0.5 science fiction (The collection has both fantasy and SF). 1 is explicitly part of a series, 3 are not, and that question seems inapplicable to the collection.

Achivedment Unlocked

So I've probably already mentioned (many many times) that one of my strategies for leading a balanced and productive retirement has been to identify a variety of "activity categories" and aim to do something in multiple categories each day, as well as aiming to do something in each category on a regular basis. That is, I don't have to hit every category every day, but I should rotate through them and get good coverage.

Today is the first day that I hit all 12 categories. I may at some point add more categories, but these are broad enough to cover almost everything. So what does that look like?

Got up around 6am (which seems to be what my body wants to do at the moment). Light breakfast and post about the podcast on social media {Category=Promotion}, then completed revisions on Skinsinger story #3 {Category=Fiction writing}.

Went out on a bike ride {Category=Exercise} and paused at the turn-around point to have coffee and read/annotate a chapter of my current LHMP book. {Category=Read for LHMP} Divert the end of the bike ride to set up the gym account that I get as part of my Medicare Advantage plan.

Shower and decompress for a bit, reading the current hard-copy novel (as opposed to the current audiobook). {Category=Fun reading} Then do a page of Medieval Welsh translation. {Category=Language} Type up the LHMP notes. {Category=Writing for LHMP} Then work on the "What is a Related Work Anyway?" background research. {Category=Writing organization/research}

Do a deep-clean of the bedroom. {Category=Housework/organization} Start dinner simmering (not a category). Do a session of weedwacking in the backyard. {Category=Yardwork}

At this point, knowing that I had a zoom date in the evening {Category=Socializing}, I wanted to push through and hit the last item {Category=Play Music}, so I put together my flute (which I haven't touched in a decade or so) and started some scales. The fingers were willing, but the embouchure was weak. This is going to take some work. (The higher priority is replacing a harp string and getting it into tune, but ticking the box with the flute was easier.)

So now I have dinner almost ready and at least a couple entirely free hours before bedtime. I know this all sounds really busy, and I'm serious that I don't have to hit every category every day. But it was fun to manage it at least once in my first month.

May 2025 in Review

22 works reviewed. 12 by women (55%), 9 by men (41%), 0 by non-binary authors (0%), 1 by authors whose gender is unknown (5%), and 9 by POC (41%)... and I really need to redo how I track incoming books.

More details here.

Books received will be tonight. Long shift I have to get to.

Did some writing...

I worked on some fiction this morning. Nothing new, but I'm doing light revisions on my skinsinger stories so I can self-publish a collection (with one new story). I completed story #1 (of 7) today, mostly fixing some consistency and continuity issues of the sort that arise when you write seven related stories over the course of twenty years and had no overall plan at the beginning.

Yesterday I did a Berkeley Bowl grocery run and met up with former co-workers for lunch. Yesterday was also the start of the Rodent Mitigation in my crawlspace and attic. They were supposed to do more of it today but were having issues with the Giant Rodent Dropping Vacuum that needed to get sorted out. Unfortunately, this meant I hung around the house all day waiting for them to maybe show up and didn't get the final "not until tomorrow" until 4pm.

I finally got around to looking into the gym membership thing I get with my Kaiser Medicare Advantage. One of the member gyms is the Planet Fitness that I used for a while pre-Covid through Bayer's fitness plan, but there are a couple other possibilities within a similar distance. Biking is good for cardio, but I'd like to get back to some weight training too.

My backup email is james@jamesdavisnicoll.com

Added later

My panix email has been restored.

james_davis_nicoll ([personal profile] james_davis_nicoll) wrote2025-05-29 10:52 am

I deleted all my emails by accident

All I need to do to restore them is to "cd into ~/.maildir" to pick a snapshot. In this context, what does that mean? Online search is not helpful.

OK, further explanation followed:

"You may well have deleted the *contents* of your inbox, but the inbox
itself is still there, as is that link in your home directory. So
(from your home directory):

cd .maildir
snapshot

look at the timestamps and pick the most recent one pre-deletion.

Inbox messages will be in the directory 'cur' once you are in a
snapshot. You can copy the files into ~/.maildir/cur (or
/users/jdnicoll/.maildir/cur"

Ok, so the literal command is
cd .maildir
snapshot

NOT
cd .maildir
and then
snapshot

This gets me a list of snapshots.

if I pick one, I get

Changing directory to /net/mail/spool/panix/7/.zfs/snapshot/2025-05-28-2000.hourly/3/jdnicoll@panix.com

What do I do next?

blood draw, etc.

I'm fine, as far as I know everyone's fine, but my trip to get blood drawn was more exciting than anticipated: the bus driver had to slam on the brakes to avoid either a bicycle or a pedestrian crossing in mid-block. She did that, checked to make sure that everyone on the bus was OK, then drove to the next corner, pulled over, and asked again if everyone was sure they were OK.

A few stops after that, someone asked me where he should get off the bus to get to "the little mall with Trader Joe's and MicroCenter." It took me a moment to figure out what he meant, because the bus we were on doesn't go there. So first I told him I wasn't sure, because this bus didn't go there, and then I started thinking about the problem. He said he wasn't good at directions, so I suggested a route that involved more walking but less chance of getting lost. I wound up signaling for his bus stop, and then telling him I was sorry, I'd forgotten they'd moved the bus stop, so [revised directions]. I should note, he didn't ask me for most of this, just what bus stop to use, and I was in the mood to do the extra bits.

The rest of the trip to Mt. Auburn to get blood drawn went smoothly. Once I got there, I had very little wait, and the phlebotomist did a very good job; I made a point of telling him so. On the way back, I stopped in Harvard Square to put more money on my Charlie card; buy and eat a slice of Otto's mashed potato and bacon pizza; and then went to Lizzy's to get Adrian a pint of non-dairy chocolate ice cream.

I was going to withdraw some cash from the ATM at the 7-11 at Comm Ave and Harvard Ave, but when I got there the screen said "windows 7. Press ctrl-alt-del to log in," which was literally impossible with the numeric keypad, so I just came home.
